NotesJerry Hind is an amateur historian, writer and researcher. Jerry lives in Chatham but spends summers at his cottage at Rondeau. Jerry is very involved in the Chatham-Kent community and is a former Key Clubber.
His research on local vets from WWI & WWII began at an auction sale. He purchased a wooden box ? for the box not the contents. In the bottom of the box were a man?s daily diaries from 1891 to 1927. After Jerry retired he thought he would transcribe these diaries of Harry Smith. While reading the books he was introduced to Victor George Pine ? a Bernardo boy who worked on Harry Smith?s farm. He started to research Victor Pine and his military career. This research led him to finding out more about Bernardo boys who were sent to this area and subsequently enlisted in the Canadian forces. He has read every newspaper printed in Chatham-Kent from 1914 ? 1919. He has found over 2,000 names missing from the original Book of Remembrance of local WWI vets.
