NotesA birth registration was found for Ernest John Phripp: Year of Registration: 1893; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Stow On The Wold; County: Gloucestershire; Volume: 6a; Page: 393. Parents: George John Phripp and Selina Wyton, married 1890, Chipping Norton, Gloucestershire, England.

A death registration was found for George John Phripp: Year of Registration: 1901; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; Age at Death: 39; District: Andover; County: Hampshire, Wiltshire; Volume: 2c; Page: 143.

George's death left Selina with seven children to raise. The boys were placed in Barnardo Homes and immigrated to Canada.

In 1903, Ernest John Phripp, 11 (along with brother Albert E Phripp, 10), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 57 Barnardo children en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On March 26, 1927, at King Township, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Ernest John PHRIPP, 34, farming, born in Longparish England, his father died long ago & he did not remember his or his mother's name; and Bertha Rosella CAIRNS, 35, housekeeping, born in King Township, Ontario, to William CAIRNS and Catherine Elizabeth CAIRNS. Witnesses: Olive CAIRNS & Arthur DEAVE both of Eversley, Ontario, Canada.

He was sent to Holland Landing then to the Barker`s farm at Sharon, Ontario. He was a farm hand and in later life spoke proudly of being a "Barnardo boy." Mr. Barker helped him get the farm near Kettleby. It was on the 4th concession of King Township. There was a large stone house which stands today.

Ernest and Bertha worked very hard, and though small of stature, Ernest was known to be lots of fun. Bertha always had a large garden with chickens milling around. The couple went to the farmers market each week with produce. Ernest's brother Albert and his family came from the West in 1936 to flee the depression. They stayed at Ernie`s at Kettleby.

In the 1940`s, Ernest and Bertha sold the Kettleby farm and bought one on the King-Vaughn Townline. It had a log type house. Then they moved to a farm just north of Snowball. Bertha`s sister, Olive Farren, lived with her family at the gas station and store at Snowball Corners. Oliva (known as Ollie) would sometimes put on skis and take Ernest and Bertha groceries when the Aurora Sideroad was impassable in the winter.

By 1945, Bertha was in bad health. Bertha Cairns Phripp died on August 4, 1947, at King Township, Ontario, Canada. She was buried in Aurora Cemetery, Aurora, Ontario, Canada.

Ernest John Phripp remarried Jean Kerr in Aurora, Ontario, Canada. They had at least one child. They lived in Aurora, Beeton, Dundalk, Grand Valley and Orangeville. While they lived in Beeton a daughter Gail was born.

Ernie died in Orangeville Hospital on February 28, 1978. He is buried in the Aurora Cemetery. He had arthritis very bad and had had several strokes and intestinal problems.
