NotesAnnie and Lottie were born in Hampshire in 1883 and 1885 respectively. When Annie was born in Fareham her mother Eliza Ann was 36 and her father John 59 a widower. John was a dairyman by trade, and the couple had married in 1879.

By the time Lottie joined the family their father was keeping a lodging house at 5 Bateman?s Alley, Portsea. Bateman?s Alley doesn?t appear on the current maps of the area.

The family?s fortunes took a turn for the worse when John died in the summer of 1885 aged 61. Lottie was still a small baby and Annie not yet two.

Their mother, Eliza Ann remarried the following year, to a John Firth. It doesn?t seem as if this relationship worked out well. It appears that John Firth deserted the little family and the girls and their mother would soon be parted.

The 1891 census records show that Eliza is in Portsea Island Union Workhouse. She is a charwoman and is listed as being married.

At this time Annie and Lottie, now aged seven and five are with a foster mother, forty-nine year old spinster, Sarah Haines, who was a dressmaker, at 97 Portway, Warminster, Wiltshire. Surely being in a country market town must have been better for these little girls than living in the grim looking workhouse, though doubtless it would have been traumatic for them leaving their mother.

The next we hear of Annie and Lottie is in 1896 with a party of 180 Dr Barnardos boys and girls bound for Toronto, Canada as ?Home Children? as such child emigrants are now known. The children set sail from Liverpool of October 8th aboard the SS Scotsman and arrived 9 days later in Quebec. They would probably have travelled on to Toronto by train, a journey of about 500 miles.

We don?t know what happened to the girls for a number of years, though it is very likely that they were in domestic service and not so likely that they stayed together. We do know, though that they either kept in touch or made contact again with one another by the time they were in their 20s.

Meanwhile, a similar drama had developed back in the old country, for a young boy who had had an unfortunate start in life. Ivor Sydney Cuthbert Brooker was born to his unmarried mother in Reading in 1892. In 1906 when Ivor was almost 14 he, too, was sent out to Canada, to Toronto, designated as a ?farm child?. Ivor?s story forms another family biography.

When we next meet our girls its 1913 and they are sharing a celebration: Lottie is marrying our young seafarer, Ivor, who is now 21, and Annie is a witness to the proceedings. Ivor has left any farming days behind and has become a bookkeeper. We can only speculate how Lottie and Ivor met but could it be that Lottie was a housemaid on the farm to which Ivor was allocated and that they formed a bond from those days?

Annie met and married Alfred Green who was also born in England though as yet we have not been able to track down the date and place of their marriage. In any event young Vernon A(lfred?) was born to them on 1st November 1919, in Toronto.
