NotesA birth record was found for Fanny Channon: Year of Registration: 1899; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Northampton (1837-1923); County: Northamptonshire; Volume: 3b; Page: 77.

In 1901, Fanny Channon, 1 year of age, was residing at 11 Granby Drive, Plymouth, Devonshire, England, with John Channon, 31, hawker; Mary Channon, 26, hawker; Albert Channon, 9; and Rose Channon, 4. (Source: 1901 Census of England and Wales; Class: RG13; Piece: 2099; Folio: 25; Page: 42.)

According to Barnardo records, Fanny was admitted to Dr. Barnardo's on the 29th of March 1912, it was recorded she was born on 12th June 1899 at Northhampton and has been baptized. The mother, Mary Ann Watts, aged 42, who was a flower seller from Bristol, although had not been married to the father, John Cannon, had lived with him for over 20 years and it was following ill health that he died from pulmonary tuberculosis on 24th December 1911 in Eastville Workhouse Infirmary. The mother bore a good character and did her best to earn her living though found this difficult with other children to care for. There were 2 brothers, Albert, aged 20, who was a labourer in a brickwork and Richard aged 9, and James aged 4 who were with the mother. There was a sister Rose, aged 15 who was in a home in the USA.

The Grandmother, Nancy Watts, aged 67, was rather feeble and crippled with rheumatism and was with the mother. In view of the home circumstances it was felt to be in Fanny's best interests that admission be offered to her.

When Fanny was admitted to Dr. Barnardo's she stayed at our Girls Village Home in Barkingside prior to sailing to Canada on the 10th September 1912.
