Williams Acquitted of Young Girls Death

This is a brief item about the accidental death of Edith Hawkins age 9yrs caused by another child, Herbert Williams age 17yrs, in Brockville. Both were Barnardo's children and both were adopted by Mr. Mrs David Leacock, Farmers.

Mr. Mrs Leacock "gave evidence in favour" of Herbert Williams and Mr C.H. Black, Toronto, representing the Barnardo's receiving home gave "character evidence" in favour of William.

On December 28, 1917, at Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Herbert Alfred Williams, 22, was drafted into military service. He declared that he resided at 26 Herbert Street, Smiths Falls, Ontario, Canada; that his Military Service Act letter and number was 236; that his date of birth was August 5, 1895; that he was born in Liverpool, England; that he was single; that he was a member of the Church of England; that his trade was farming; and that his next of kin was his aunt, Mrs. D. Mitchell, who resided at 9 Newpack Terrace, Shewsbury, Wales, England. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.

On May 9, 1918, at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Herbert Alfred Williams, 22, was drafted into military service. He declared that he resided at North Augusta, RR No 3, Ontario, Canada; that his military service act letter and number was 4020120; that his date of birth was August 5, 1895; that his place of birth was Liverpool, England; that he was married; that he was a member of the Church of England; that he was a farmer; and that his next of kin was his wife, Mrs. Blanche Williams, who resided at North Augusta, RR No 3, Ontario, Canada. He was described as 5 foot 5 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair.
