Attestation papers were signed 22 Sep 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec. James McConning Potts was born 2 Aug 1896 in Birminghm, England. He was a Fireman by trade. His Next of Kin was Mrs M. Potts, his Mother, of Birmingham, England. He had previous military experience for 2 years with the 34 Battalion C.F.A. 5'6" in height with blue eyes and light brown hair. His religion was listed as Wesleyan.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he died at Number 5 Casualty Clearing station after being hit by enemy fire at the attack on Marcelcave, Somme, Picardie, France. Next of Kin was Charles H. Potts of 1 Harold Street, Dudley, Pendleton, North Birmingham, England. He was buried in Crouy British Cemetery, Crouy-Saint-Pierre, Somme, Picardie, France. Plot: V. B. 19.

Spent time in Chorlton Union Workhouse (probably Styal Cottage Homes) following his mother's death in December 1905. Although he was sent to Canada, his siblings remained in England. Some details on his attestation papers are false, but later corrections on his full service record are accurate.
