NotesThomas and Catherine/Katherine Smith, came from a large family in Liverpool, England. On my grandfather's marriage certificate, he states his fathers name was Samuel and he was deceased. So, possibly their mother could not cope and, sent two of her children to Canada for a better life as Home Children.

Thomas my grandfather was 10 ish when he was sent with his little sister, at the quayside in Canada where they were parted, never to meet again.

He was sent on the Alberta, to work for a farmer, who treated him no better than a dog. He was nothing more than a slave. Very little to eat, always freezing cold, and, of course, no love whatsoever.

Little Katherine/Catherine got sent we think to a family in Montreal where she might have been adopted. We hope it was to a good family.

At the age of 18, Thomas had paid his due to the Canada farmer and left, he went lumber jacking and various other jobs. And then in 1924 he got on a boat in Quebec and made his way back to England.

He met and married my grandmother Janet, and they had three children the eldest being my mum. To this very day we do not know anything about his life before Canada, only what i have managed to uncover, and we certainly know nothing of his life in Canada.

He spoke very little of his life as a Home Child, and he went to his grave not knowing what happened to his little sister.

My mum is now in her late 70's and I would love to solve the puzzle for her. Little by little, I am uncovering my grandad's past. But if I could crack Canada, that would be the cherry on top of the cake.
