NotesJames arrived at Barnardos from Oldham Union in September of 1909. He was sent to Canada in October 1909. He was a farm hand in Indian Head Saskatchewan at the ripe old age of 11* (or maybe 8!). He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916 served in France and was wounded in September of 1918. He died in Montreal (Verdun) in 1943 with his death announcement indicating that he was born in 1901, NOT 1898 as his Barnardos 'paperwork' indicates. The Barnardos file included a handwritten note indicating, JAMES THOMAS BROWN (or PRIEST), admitted from Oldham Union, age 11, September 1909) I've been told that a family member or guardian MUST have signed paperwork to have allowed him to be sent to Canada, but we find NO trace of that! His tombstone, in the Field Of Honour, Pointe Claire, Quebec says, Pte James Brown, 249th Battalion CEF, 1901-1943. IF this is accurate, he would have been 15 years of age when he enlisted and was sent to France and 17 when he was wounded in the right shoulder in September of 1918 !. His Attestation papers from the CEF indicate that he was born in 1896. With various 'documents' showing his birth year as 1896, 1897,1898 and 1901,we don't know which birth date is accurate.Nor can we trace ANY existance prior to his arrival at Barnardos in 1909, other than the minutes from a meeting at Oldham Union indicating that James should be considered for migration to Canada and approving him to be sent to Barnardos.
