Attestation papers were signed 19 Aug 1915 in Niagara, Ontario. John Powell was born 13 Aug 1894 in London, England. His Next of Kin was Ms. Fannie Powell of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada. He was a Lumber Jack by trade. 5' 7 1/2" in height with blue eyes and brown hair, he had 5 vaccination marks on his left arm. His religion was listed as Church of England.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty state that he had previously been reported missing, and then to have died on or since 15 Aug 1917 during the attack at Lens, Nord Pas de Calais, France. Additional Next of Kin information was added for Mr. Edward Powell of 160 Bright Street, Sarnia, Ontario but letters were returned undelivered. A second address where information was sent in 1936 was included for Miss Ada L. Powell of Mail Route No. 4, Petrolia, Ontario.
