According to Barnardos, the Smith children were fatherless for 9 years (David Smith was 9 when transported) and that their mother was worried about them being on the streets and ruined. They are listed as having been very poor, ragged and much neglected.

In 1901, Ruth E. Brown, 35, is shown residing at Dartmouth, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with her husband, Abram Brown, 35, porter; and Clarance Brown, 4. Ruth is described as of African descent; born in Nova Scotia; birthdate March 10, 1865.

Ruth Eva Smith Brown died on January 12, 1931, of cerebral hemorrhage, at the age of 66. She was described as of African descent; born in England; housewife; and she had lived in Canada for about 50 years. Her parents names' were unknown. She was buried on January 14, 1931, at Christ Church Cemetery.
