NotesA birth registration was found for Derrick Moriarty: Mother's Maiden Surname: Holloway; Date of Registration: Jul Aug Sep 1943; Registration district: Chelsea; Registration county: Greater London; Volume Number: 1a; Page Number: 470.

In 1951, Derrick Moriarty, 8 (along with brother, Richard P. Moriarty, 6) arrived at Fremantle, Australia, in a group of 6 children c/o Miss Hall, Fairbridge Farm Schools, 38 Holland Villas Road, London, England.

Derrick and Richard Moriarty were placed in the Fairbridge Farm School, Molong, Australia. Derek absconded and was returned in 1959. Derek is a committee member of the Old Fairbridgians' Association of Molong. and is currently residing in Berkeley, N.S.W.

On the website, Leaguenet ({website}sportingpulse.com), Peter Montgomery, reflected:

"I recall being 'taken in' by this young half-back who had an albino look about him. He fascinated me. Snow white hair, white eyebrows, white skin and a wiry frame into which he packed about nine and half-stone of solid muscle.

His arms and legs had ?homemade? ink tattoos, and I thought to myself, "this is one tough buggar."

The player was the one and only Derek Moriarty, a Magpie Hall of Famer, and one of the best pound for pound players EVER to pull on a Magpie jumper.

Derek - who came to Australia from England with the ?The Fairbridge Farm School Child Migration Scheme? at 8 years of age...had a tough life and he credits his involvement with Rugby League as preventing him from getting into all sorts of trouble with the law..

'I was always in trouble, I copped plenty of floggings at the hands of the police, as was the norm in those days. They belted you, rather than make you go to court.

'Luckily Neville Hunter and Garry Marriage got me involved in the Hay League side and I never looked back', Derek told me.

We, the players, nick named Derek 'White Eagle' and the 'Iron Man'.

Both fitted him to a tee.

After every game he would treat himself, smothering the acres of lost skin with a red based lotion called 'Mercurochrome' ? which gave him the appearance of painted Indian.

He used it right up until the time he retired ? at the age of 38 years of age with Berkeley in the Illawarra.

Derek?s love of the Magpies Club is what sport is all about. Always the life of the party.

He was a ?Neil John? before Neil-John Nisbet, such was his dedication and commitment to the Club.

He was a role model then ? and he is still a role model for me.

He is a great mate to all the players who were team members with him ? and we loved catching up with him at the recent 1967 Premiership re-union."

In an article in Adelaide Today, June 17, 2008, it was reported,

"PREMIER Mike Rann has formally apologised to people abused as children while in state care.

Today, Mr Rann read a shared apology, signed by the government and the Anglican, Catholic, Uniting and Lutheran churches."

Derek Moriarty commented, "I'm a victim, albeit from another State, and I share the feelings of those affected by Mr Rann's apology. We are still waiting for ours. What I can not understand is that people would rather attempt to score political mileage or scorn those in office, rather than accept what has been proven to be a blight on Australia's history. By the way, 'We Are Not Fooled' any of the time !!!"
