NotesA birth registration was found for Isaac John Beard: Year of Registration: 1890; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Lambeth; County: Greater London, London, Surrey; Volume: 1d; Page: 447. Parents: Thomas Beard and Ellen Malyon, married 1885 at St. Saviour, London, England.

John Beard and his sisters, May and Caroline Ellen Beard, were admitted to the Lambeth Union Workhouse on June 29, 1898.

Their father, Thomas, had been admitted to Banstead Asylum on May 24, 1898. Their mother, Ellen, was in Renfrew Road Workhouse.

On November 2, 1898, the Board agreed to allow the mother out and to keep two of her children at the Schools. The mother was discharged on November 3, 1898, taking Caroline and Michael. Caroline was re-admitted by order of the Board on February 18, 1899 (RO's Special Report). The father was discharged from Banstead Asylum on February 28, 1899, and their mother was then living at 26 Elfin Road, Camberwell New Road. Caroline and John were then discharged to their parents on March 25, 1899, who were residing at 39 Warrior Road, Camberwell New Road. May was discharged on April 8, 1899.

Their father, Thomas Beard, then deserted the family. He was sent to prison for 3 months on October 15, 1900.

John, May, Caroline and Walter Beard were all re-admitted on May 19, 1900.

Their mother was in care of G. Howlett, Esq, 193 Clapshaw Road, SW.

John was discharged to Barnardo's Home on June 12, 1901.

In 1901, Isaac Beard, 10, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a large group of Barnardo children: 239 to Toronto, Ontario; 68 to Winnipeg, Manitoba; 20 to Russell, Manitoba; and 3 to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

Caroline was discharged in care of Mrs. Mace, 4 Wolfington Road, on April 28, 1904.

Walter was discharged to East Cliff House in Margate on July 13, 1904.

Age 11, desirably placed, employed at chores, good health, attends congregational church and sunday school, character good, an exceptionally good boy, Mr Firth is a first class farmer, reputed to be one of the best in Southwold. The boy could hardly have a better home or prospects than are afforded here. They are well pleased with him.

According to Dr Barnardo Ups and Downs, VOL VIII APRIL - MAY 1902, No. 1, Isaac John Beard had been placed with G. W. Firth, of Frome, Ontario, Canada.

On December 18, 1919, at Elgin, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between John I. Beard, 29, broom maker, born in England, to Thomas Beard (did not know mother's name); and Frances May Barfelt, 19, born in England to William Barfelt and Margaret Kew.

In October, 1923, John Beard, 32, broom maker, entered the United States through the port of Detroit, Michigan. He declared that he resided in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; that his contact in Canada was his wife, Frances Beard, who resided at 21 Jonas Street, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; that his final destination was Detroit, Michigan; that he carried $25 on his person; that he was going to visit Norman Anderson of 4804 Lincoln Avenue, Detroit, Michigan. He was described as 5 foot 7-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; dark brown hair; brown eyes. He was born in West Norwood, England.
