On January 24, 1916, at Exhibition Camp, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Lieut. Edwin George Savage, of the 97th Btln, CEF, declared that he was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA; that he was the manager of the Grand Hotel, 83 Victoria, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; that his next of kin was his brother, Frederick Robert Savage who resided at 8 Tippindavies (?) Avenue, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; and that he was a member of the Catholic faith.

On April 9, 1917, Lieut. Edwin George Savage died in action at the trenches in France. A letter from his commanding officer, Roy Shaw, still survives detailing Edwin's death.

"May 8, 1917

Miss Ida Cowen
Hounslow

Dear Miss Cowen,

I have your of the 2nd re Lieut Savage.

Lieut Savage was our scourt and Intelligence officer and was attached to Battalion AG. during our show of Apl 9th--He did not go over with the assaulting woaves but about an hour and a half after the attack went over, we wanted to find out just where all our men were and I asked him to take 3 of of his Scout section with him and clear up the situation for me -- He went up to the left flank of our position and was told by our officer there that the Huns were in the trench about 150 yards away. Lt Savage and his 3 men went up the trench to confirm this, as was his duty -- This officer and 3 men ran into a group of about 3 Huns and they "went" for them and drove them back to a strong point in the rear -- Then the Huns realizing how small our attacking party was started sniping at them and our men carried away by Lieut Savage's courage carried on with the attack -- It was a magnificent piece of brave work, but the odds were much too great -- Lieut Savage and one of his men were shot dead and Lance Corporal and the other men fought their way back to our lines during which time the Lance Corporal was also shot through the hand.

Lieut Savage was one of our gamest officers and his death is a distinct loss to the battalion.

Permit me to express to you my sympathy.

Sincerely,
HL Roy Shaw
Major
Comdg 87th Battalion"
