NotesElizabeth "Lizzie" Robinson was born about 1864. Her parents were Henry Robinson and was Eliza Hill. She had six brothers and sisters.

Eliza Sarah Hill married Henry George Robinson probably around 1860. Henry was a "laborer" at the time they married and thereafter worked as a brick layer and a plasterer. In 1861 they were living on High Street in Putney. Her father Henry, appears to have abandoned the family about the time the twins George and Alfred were born. Eliza was apparently trying to support the family as a charwoman. A charwoman was a person for hire on an hourly or daily basis as a maid or housekeeper.

Unable to provide, Susan's mother Elizabeth gave Eliza and her sister Susan up to Maria Rye's Home for Destitute Little Girls in Peckham.

1872/73 Annual Peckham Report - #122, E.R. aged 10, father deserted; mother left with six young children. In the Home at Peckham; to sail in the spring. (Sister of Susan)

In 1874, Elizabeth Robinson, 10 (along with sister, Susan Robinson, 7), arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 148 Maria Rye children en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.

Susan's sister Elizabeth ended up being placed in Drayton, a village some eight miles from Arthur.

From the "The Confederate" 4 April, 1876. (Newspaper)

Magistrates Court. - A court composed of seven J.P.'s was convened on Wednesday last, in Moorefield, upon a complaint, laid by Nelson and Hiram McKague, charging James and Emily McKague with beating and otherwise abusing one of Miss Rye's "waifs," named Lizzie Robinson, about 13 years old. The decision of the court was that Emily McKague pay a fine of $1, and costs $14.45 - $15.45, besides the expenses of six witnesses which she had present. The man, James McKague, was acquitted. The child was taken away from the McKague's and brought by Constable House to Miss Rye's agent here, S. Smith, Esq., in whose charge she was left. Since then the girl has been given for keeping to Mr John Avery, Bosworth, upon the recommendation of the constable.

Note: Nelson and Hiram McKague were brothers of the accused James McKague.

1875 Inspection Report -

(1) Guelph Centre - Rev W Ball, Inspector, Peckham 1874, with Jas McKay (?McKague), Drayton.
(2) Guelph Centre, 13, Peckham 1874, Meth, goes to Church & Sunday School, with Mr Avery, (Every?) Drayton, usual terms, here 9 months, housework. Former employer, Jas McKay, ill treated. Lived one other place. A very good girl in an excellent home.

Mr. Avery also had another "home child" by the name of Francis McMillan. Francis was brought to Canada in 1873, at age 10, from Glasgow, Scotland. A 1875 Inspection report for Francis reads: Guelph Centre, 12 (age), came with Miss Macpherson, Meth, goes to Church & Sunday School, with Mr. Avery, Drayton, usual terms, here 4 years, farm work. A splendid boy in an excellent home. It would appear that the "here 4 years" should read "here 2 years"?

On June 7, 1887, at Lindsay, Victoria, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Elizabeth Harriet Robinson, 24, born in England to William Henry and Eliza Robinson; and James Wesly Edwards, 22, painter, born in Mariposa to John and Elizabeth Edwards. (James was also known as "Hector" Edwards.)

James Wesly and Elizabeth Harriet Robinson Edwards had at least 4 four children: Gertrude May Edwards, born December 20, 1888; Cora Irene Edwards, born November 10, 1892; Herbert Wesley Edwards, born September 24, 1895 (died April 22, 1916); and Reginald Charles Kinver Edwards, born November 23, 1906.

James and Elizabeth resided in Peterborough and later relocated to 182 Strachan Avenue, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada.

James Wesley Edwards and his son, Herbert Samuel Wesley Edwards both joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1915 and were both assigned to the 39th Battalion. Herbert died on April 22, 1916, while a part of the 4th Battalion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps in Belgium. He is buried in the Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery in Ieper, Belgium.

Elizabeth and her sister, Susan, Robinson stayed in touch during their lives in Canada, although the relationship was not the most harmonious.
