NotesIn 1885, Walter Shires, 12, arrived in Canada, in a group of Middlemore children.

Walter Shire, aged 12, from Guildford Union, placed with J. D. Crane, farmer, Chatsworth, Ontario. Honest, untruthful, stubborn, and sulky, and a great source of trouble; showing signs of slight improvement; very much troubled with scalp disease."

On March 30, 1897, at Ekfrid, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Walter Shiers, 23, born in Gyldford, England, to Walter and Mary Shiers; and Elizabeth Ann Atkinson, 23, born in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, to Francis Atkinson and Grace Philips.

The couple had at least 4 children: Allan Gladstone Shires, born June 28, 1898, in Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, died March 23, 1909, at Melbourne, Ontario, Canada, of Muscular Atrophy and Bronchitis, 4 years duration; Ellen A. Shires, born July 23, 1900, in Ekfrid, Middlesex, Canada; Walter Edwin Shires, born January 31, 1903, at Middlesex, Canada, died March 19, 1920, at Ekfrid Middlesex, Ontario, Canada, of progressive muscular paralysis; and Margaret Grace [Maggie] Shires, born March 10, 1905, in Ekfrid, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada.

Elizabeth Ann Atkinson Shires died in July 16, 1913, at Victoria Hospital, London, Middlesex, Canada, of asthenia. Walter Shires died in 1937. The family is buried at Longwoods Cemetery, Caradoc, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada.
