NotesA birth registration was found for Sarah Hyam: Year of Registration: 1905; Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep; District: Lambeth; County: Greater London, London, Surrey; Volume: 1d; Page: 327. (EDITORS NOTE: Sarah was born 5th July 1905 in the Lambeth Union Infirmary.)

On July 10 1905, Sarah Hyam was baptised at St Philip, Lambeth, daughter of Sarah, who was a servant residing at Lambeth Workhouse

On July 21, 1910, Sarah Hyam was admitted to Barnardo's. Sarah was admitted under a Custody and Maintenance Order made at Oxted, Surrey, petty sessions. The case was brought by the NSPCC as Sarah had been ill-treated by both her mother and father. It was alleged that at one point she was sent to live with an aunt in Purley, Surrey to conceal the marks of violence from the police.

For several weeks before admission Sarah had been cared for in the Bletchingly Union. It was said that she became afraid at any suggestion of her returning to her mother.

Unfortunately Sarah's mother and father are not named nor are any other relatives with the exception of a mention of a half sister, Ethel who was said to be 7 weeks old at the time of Sarah's admission.

On admission she was boarded out in Acton with a Mrs Finch and she remained there until 22nd September 1919 when she was transferred to the Girls Village Homes, Barkingside.

In 1920, Sarah Hyam, 15, arrived at Quebec, Canada, along with a group of 112 girls en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. Group escorted from England to Canada by Dr and Mrs. Hobday. SS. Scandinavian sailed from Southampton September 24, 1920 arrived in Montreal October 3, 1920. She named her next of kin in England as Mother-Mrs Pepper, 4 Rutherford Cottages, Wallingham?, Surrey

Note her mother Sarah Hyam married Ebenezer Pepper in 1909 and had at least three children with her husband - Ethel born 1910, William T born 1913, and Helen born 1917, all children born in Godstone, Surrey

Went to Peterborough for 4 days, then to Toronto for 5 days (Jarvis Street). Arrived London, Ontario October 12, to live and work at Mr & Mrs. Humphries, 334 James St, for 6 years.

On October 7 1926, Sarah May Hyam, 21, born Surrey, England, daughter of William, married William George Lowman, 26, born Brighton, Sussex, England, son of Harry Lowman and Emily Jackson, in London, Middlesex, Ontario

Sarah Hyam was mentioned in the May 1927 edition of Ups and Downs as being now Mrs W G Lowman. Mrs Reazin visited

Sarah Hyam Lowman died October 30 1993, London, Ontario, Canada.
