NotesTommy was a very much loved and only on of John Henry and Ellen Dolan. Sadly Tommys father passed away when Tommy was very young. His mother, Ellen, re-married. John Sumners, by all accounts, was not a good man and did not like the children much. Being of the Catholic faith the three siblings, Beatrice, Thomas and Ellen (Nellie), attended the school according to their faith. John wasn't agreeable to this and removed them and placed them into St Albans school. Ellen, my great grandmother, became increasingly worried for her children and chose to ask Fr Hudson for help. Fr Hudson had Ellen sign papers agreeing to Fr Hudson to do what he could to help Tommy. The girls were needed at home to help their mother. It is not certain whether there was a child born to Ellen and her second husband although my belief is that there was a baby girl named Agnes who was just six months old when she died. May she Rest in Eternal Peace.
Ellen believed that Tommy would be taken 'into care' for a short while but as she wanted him to have a better life she signed the necessary paperwork. The paperwork states that 'The home is clean and well kept'. A fact I am extremely proud to learn considering the family circumstances. Mother and son said their goodbyes just totally unaware of what the future held. It was a while before Ellen heard anything about her beloved son and letters show she was very anxious about not receiving any form of correspondence. Finally she learnt he had been taken to Coleshill boys home. All seemed well for a while and then for some months nothing. Nothing until she let her feelings known and wrote to Fr Hudson demanding to be told of her sons whereabouts. The letter she received was so to the point. Her son had been sent to Canada where he will receive a better chance in life....How Ellen would have reacted to that news will never be known but I do know that her health deteriorated quickly. Ellen was never given any direct address to her son and so had to send and receive any letters to and from Tommy via Fr Hudson. Ellen passed away in 1919 and never saw her son again. Tommy came back to UK in the 30's where he met and married Florence Parsons. They had three children. John, my much loved uncle who sadly lost his battle to cancer, my own mum Ann and their youngest Angela
I managed to obtain any remaining leters, records etc from Fr Hudsons Society and passed them to mum.
I am extremely proud of my Tommy and no-one will ever know how much I miss him still
