In August 1914, Reginald Alway, 16, baker, crossed into the United States through the port of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He declared his final destination was Laurel, Massachusetts.

On December 7, 1915, at Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Reginald Wilfrid Alway, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Bristol, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Miss Lily Alway, who resided at Newscombe, Winscombe, Somerset, England; that his date of birth was December 28, 1896; that he was an Apprentice; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 2-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; grey eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Methodist faith.
