NotesThomas Baker's granddaughter reported:

"Pamela's father was Thomas Baker, born in Birmingham on 17 August 1877. He was the youngest child of Henry Baker, born in Birmingham 5 February 1822, and christened in St Philip's, Birmingham, 19 April 1824. Henry was the son of another Henry Baker, a shoe maker, and his mother was Catherine Baker, who was born abroad, circa 1778, and who died on 26 January 1850 in Birmingham. Henry Baker II had a younger brother, John, a nail-maker, while Henry Baker II was a silver smith in 1841. Henry II subsequently was a hawker, and a county court bailiff. His death certificate (he died on 12 August 1892, aged 73) described him as a "gun lock filer" (like silver smithing, a typical Birmingham trade of the time). On 23 March 1857 Henry junior, aged 35, married Elizabeth Ryan, aged 21. She had been born in Chester and was the daughter of John Ryan, a gas fitter, and Rosanna Ryan. They had a son Henry, on December 16 1867, who appears to have died, and then they had the following children who lived to appear on censuses:

John Baker, born 15 November 1858
William Baker, born circa 1861 (aged 4 months on census 7/4/1861)
Elizabeth Baker, born circa 1864
Frederick Baker, born circa 1867
Alfred Baker, born circa 1870
Ada Baker, born circa 1874

Elizabeth Baker senior died on 24 August 1908, and on her death certificate her age was given as 69.

Thomas Baker (born 1877) married Pamela Ann Harris in St John's Church, Ladywood, Birmingham, on 6 November 1898. The couple were both aged 21, and Pamela snr was the daughter of Richard Harris, a miller. She had been born in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Pamela and Thomas Baker had a son, Victor Richard Baker, on 6 March 1898.

Thomas Baker (born 1877) died 2nd November 1909, aged 32, having fallen from his ladder pursuing his living as a window cleaner. At the inquest, it was stated that there were four children and that the youngest was two. I have so far been unable to find the name of the youngest child who would have been born in about 1907.

By the 1911 census only Thomas appears to be living with his mother, Pamela Baker. Victor Baker is at Kingham School, a children's home. Subsequently, Victor joined the Royal Marines, and Thomas jnr was in the Grenadier Guards. The latter married my grandmother, Ellen Julia Beasley, in 1923, and my father was born in 1924. However, his mother, Ellen, died shortly after his birth, and my father (Thomas Baker III) was adopted."

In 1913, Thomas Baker, 12, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 110 Middlemore children.

Thomas Baker married Ellen Julia Beasley in 1923 at Aston, Warwickshire, England.

One child was born of this marriage: Thomas Baker III, born in 1923.

A death registration was found for Ellen J Baker: Date: Jan-Feb-Mar 1924; Death: 24; District: Kings Norton; County: Worcestershire; Volume: 6d; Page: 181.
