1911 Canadian Census records place Leonard Porter as a Servant in the household of Byron Beam in Welland, Ontario. Born in Apr 1897 he was born in England and immigrated in 1901.

Attestation papers were signed 15 Apr 1915 in Hamilton, Ontario. Leonard Porter was born 8 Jun 1885 (Year of birth was more likely 1897) in Birmingham, England. Next of Kin was his brother, Ernest Porter of Ridgeway, Ontario. He was a labourer by trade. He had previous Military experience with the 44th Regiment in Welland. 5' 5 1/2" in height with brown eyes and dark brown hair, he had 4 vaccination marks on his left arm. His religion was listed as Methodist.

Commonwealth War Graves Registers and Circumstances of Casualty states he was Killed in Action in the trenches north of Courcelette, Somme, Picardie, France. An additional note states that the Next of Kin could not be located at his original submitted address. Leonard's body was not recovered for burial, his name is listed on the Vimy Memorial in Vimy, Nord Pas de Calais, France.
