In 1901, Walter Butwell, 2 years of age, was shown residing at 29 Court, 7 House, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Other family members included: Charles Butwell, 31, electro plate stamper; Lucy L. Butwell, 30; Sarah L. Butwell, 3; and Charles Hy. Butwell, 5. (Source 1901 Census of England; Class: RG13; Piece: 2841; Folio: 28; Page: 48.)

In 1910, Walter Butwell, 11 (along with his brothers, Charles Butwell, 15, Sidney Butwell, 9; and John Butwell, 7), arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 154 children. (Sister Sarah L. Butwell, 13, arrived on the Cathaginian in 1911 with Middlemore Children.)

On May 29, 1918, Walter Butwell enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided in McAdam, York Co., New Brunswick, Canada; that he was born in Birmingham, England; that his next of kin was his mother, Louise Butwell, who also resided in McAdam, York Co., New Brunswick, Canada; that his date of birth was December 16, 1898; that he was a fitters-helper; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 4-1/2 inches in height; medium complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Congregationalist faith.

[EDITORS NOTE--On February 18, 1918, Walter's mother, Lucy Butwell, 41, widow, was debarred as LPC (Likely Public Charge) from entering the United States through Vanceboro, Maine as a US Citizen, claiming birth in New Rochelle, New York. The immigration officer noted that she had no proof of birth in the United States as a citizen. "Claims born in New Rochelle, New York but husband was English but is dead several years. Claims son John was born in New Rochelle, New York and had lived in Bangor 4 yrs and then admitted born in England and never been in US. Son in Middlemore Home - England a charitable institution which paid his passage to Canada."

In March 1918, Sidney's mother, Lucy L. Butwell, 41, widow, was debarred as LPC (Likely Public Charge) from entering the United States. She had declared on her entry that she had immigrated from England, residing in McAdam, New Brunswick. She stated her son, Walter Butwell also resided in McAdam. She further declared that she had previously lived in the United States, specifically New Rochelle, New York, from 1876-1885 and that she would be residing in the US permanently. She also declared that she was a US citizen, claiming to have been born in New Rochelle, New York.

In February 1920, Lucy L. Butwell, 42, widow, entered the United States. She declared that she was a cook; that she was a Canadian national residing in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; that her contact in Canada was her son, Sydney Butwell, who resided at 81 Waterloo Street; that her final destination was Hartland, Maine; that she paid for her passage herself; that she had $600 on her person; that she had previously resided in Bangor, Maine; that she was going to stay with her daughter, Mrs. Warren Linnett for six months; and that she had been born in New Rochelle, New York.]

In May 1920 Walter Butwell, 21, entered the United States through Houlton, Maine. He declared that he was a machinist helper; that he resided in McAdam, York, New Brunswick, Canada; that he had no relatives in Canada; that his final destination was Houlton, Maine; that he had paid his fare himself; that he had $30 on his person; that he had previously been to Houlton, Maine for 5 months from 1919-1920; that he was going to stay with his brother, Sidney Butwell in Houlton, Maine; that he intended to remain permanently; and that he was from Birmingham, England.

In 1930, Walter Butwell, 30, automobile salesman, was residing at 9 Powsland Street, Portland, Cumberland, Maine, USA. He was residing with his wife, Jennie Butwell, 28, and son, Richard Butwell, 11 months (Richard died in 1988 in Torrance, California). He stated he was born in England; that he immigrated in 1909; and that he had been married since he was 28.

Walter Butwell died in 1933 in Maine. Jennie Louise Butwell died in 1937 in Portland, Cumberland, Maine.
