Edwin was placed with Martin Luther and Mary Fields, at Brookfield, Nova Scotia, Canada.

On December 10, 1913, at Bible Hill, Nova Scotia, Canada, a marriage was registered between Edwin Brooks, 21, farmer, born in England to Edwin Brooks, painter, and Emma Brooks; and Esther Pratt, 22, born in Stewiack Township, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Stephen Pratt, farmer, and Elizabeth Pratt.

On August 17, 1915, at Camp Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada, Edwin Brooks, 23, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Birmingham, England; that his next of kin was his wife, Ester Brooks, who resided in Belmond, Nova Scotia; that his date of birth was March 31, 1892; and that he was a farmer. He was described as 5 foot 7-1/2 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

Edwin Brookes changed his name to John Edward Brookes before 1922.

On March 11, 1922, at Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada, a marriage was registered between John Edward Brookes, 27, widower, labourer, born in Birmingham, England, to Edward Brookes and Emma Mee; and Lillian May Lake, 24, born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada, to Timothy Lake and Agnes Walters.

At least 4 children were born of this marriage: Gurtrude Brooks, born March 8, 1922, at Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada, died February 5, 1930, at Payzant Memorial Hospital, Windsor, Hants, Nova Scotia, Canada, of meningitis.
