Henry and Charles' father died first and then their mother. A Vicar from Holy Trinity Church, Minores applied to Barnardos to have them admitted. They entered a day after their mother died. They were placed in Teighmore Home, Gorey,Jersey, Channel Islands and then moved to Kinnaird Home which they believe to have been in East End, London.
In 1887, Henry J. Scates, 11, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with a group of 209 boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
On March 29, 1900, at Peterborough, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Henry Joseph Scates, 26, farmer, born in England, to Edward Scates and Mrs. Green; and another home child, Alice Blaber, 25, born in England to Thos Blaber and Fanny Elliot. Henry's brother, Charles Scates, was a witness to the marriage.
In 1901, Henry J. Scates, 27, farm labourer, is shown residing at Cavan, Durham, Ontario, Canada, along with his wife, Alice H. Scates, 25. His date of birth is shown as September 21, 1873, and his immigration year as 1887.
Henry and Alice Scates had at least one child: Anna Bella Scates, born 1901.
