NotesFrederick was admimtted to Barnardos on 23 November 23, 1922 after his mother, Edith Annie Banfield (Gregory) died of pneumonia following influenza. Frederick's sister, (age 2 at the time) lived wth a lady in Berkshire. Frederick arrived in Canada in 1937.

From Frederick's own account, he stayed with a couple of different families in Ontario before .finally staying with a family in Peterboro.

Frederick eventually enlisted in the Royal Canadian Naval Voluntary Reserve and remained until September 1945.

Until his death, he believed he had a brother, Jack.
