In 1911, John A. Salmon, 14, arrived at Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, in a group of 95 Fegan boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On October 4, 1915, at Port Hope, Ontario, Canada, John Arthur Salmon, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in London, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Miss Elizabeth Salmon, who resided at 28 Tenbury Road, Walthamstow, England; that his date of birth was February 20, 1897; that he was a laborer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 3 inches in height; fair complexion; blue eyes; brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

On December 20, 1915, at Belleville, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between ; John Arthur Salmon, 19, soldier, born in England, to Arthur Salmon and Elizabeth West; and (another home child) Lillian Margaret Green, 19, born in England to John Green and Ada Cox.
