In 1875, Alfred George Hastie, 4, arrived at Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 41 Louisa Birt children. No manifests are available to display the name of the ship, however, the information was gleaned from the papers of Col. J. W. Laurie.

From: "The Little Immigrants: The Orphans Who Came to Canada" by Kenneth Bagnell, page 32.

"During the years between 1873 and 1876, Louisa Birt made many trips to Halifax, bringing in total almost six hundred children and delivering them to the supervision of J. Wimburn Laurie, who, like most other people who had worked in child immigration, had a program which, in its theory, had the best interests of everyone at heart. 'On arrival,' he told the provincial immigration agent in 1875, 'they come at once under my charge, the legislature by enactment confirming the action of their parents or nearest relatives and appointing me the legal guardian. Regular applications distinctly prescribing the conditions under which the children are allotted are received by me, and these in all cases must be recommended by a clergyman. I make the best selection that careful enquiry and local knowledge will admit of and, whilst looking on the allotment as a permanent arrangement, I require quarterly reports, giving full particulars of the child's health, conduct, progress in and out of school, and this in every case certified by the local minister."

On October 22, 1891, Alfred Hastie, 22, farmer, crossed into the United States through the port of Boston, Massachusetts.

Alfred George Hastie married Anne Jane Brooks (also called Jennie Ann Brooks) on November 13, 1895, at Newton, Massachusetts, USA. The couple had at least three children: James H. Hastie, born 1896; Eleanor M. Hastie, born 1899; and Alfred E. Hastie, born 1904.

On September 12, 1918, at Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA, Alfred George Hastie registered for the United States draft. He declared that he resided at 57 Capitol Street, Watertown, Massachusetts; that he was 45 years of age; that his date of birth was November 13, 1872; that he had filed first papers for his citizenship; that he was British; that he was a Provision Clerk for R. L. Squire in Market, Boston, Massachusetts; and that his next of kin was his wife Jennie A. Hastie. He was described as short; medium build; blue eyes; brown hair.

Alfred George Hastie became a naturalized citizen of the United States on May 26, 1920. He declared that he resided at 57 Capital Street, Watertown, Massachusetts; that his date of birth was November 13, 1872; that he was born in Liverpool, England; that his occupation was that of Clerk; and that his wife's name was Jennie. (Certificate 1467398)

Alfred George Hastie died in June, 1962, in Watertown, Massachusetts, USA.
