NotesThe 1881 British Census has Charles and William Hagell living in an Orphanage with 56 other children. The name listed is The Little Wanderers Home, Greenwich, Kent, England. The head of the Institution is a Mr. Joseph Street.

In 1885, Charles Hagell (along with brother, William Hagell) arrived in Quebec, Canada, in a group of Fegan boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Charles and his brother were sent to Canada as child emigrants under the Dr Barnardo's Homes scheme which was established in Canada. Both parents had died when the boys were very young.

Each year from 1884 to 1939, with a few exceptions, parties of boys from Fegans homes emigrated to Canada. Generally the boys would be 14 years of age when they went, although on occasions they might be younger, particularly if accompanying an older brother. The party would travel by train from Euston station in London, to board the boat at Liverpool in the early Spring.

The 1891 Canadian Census has James Hagel(l) living with the Woodrow family in Oxford County, Norwich North. James is 18 and is listed as a student.

The 1901 Canadian Census has James Charles Hagell living with the Pearce family as a servant
in Oxford South District, sub district Norwich South. An Aunt of the Pearce family is listed as Almira Smith a widow, born 05 Feb.1834. There may be some connection in that James C. Hagell married an Alice Smith. Alice Smith may be connected to this Aunt.

He died from accidental burning and suffocation.
