NotesIn 1882, John Kelly, 15, arrived at Quebec, Canada.

"Sixteenth Annual Report of the Local Government Board, 1886-87; Copy of Reports of Inspection of Children sent out to Canada, as of February 12, 1887.

Report of Mr. W. E. Ibbotson, Government Immigration Agent at Sherbrooke, P.Q.

John W. Kelly, aged 15. From Middlesbrough Union. Placed with the Rev. L. L. Desauliniers.?I have the honour to report that this boy, John W.Kelly, was sent to the Rev. L. L. Desauliniers, parish priest of Lennoxville, by Mr. A. Robert, Agent, L'Evechede, Montreal, about the middle of November 1884. He remained in his service for a period of some six months. As regards his work he gave satisfaction, but was of a rough and pugilistic nature. According to his own confessions he bore a very bad character before he left his native home, which was well known by the officials at Middlesbrough. This boy has stated that he had gone through many punishments, such as having been flogged, incarcerated, and further punished on the tread mill; he acknowledged that he had always been a tramp. His father was a sailor and steamship engine driver ; he (the boy) made several voyages with his father, once to India, another to Iceland, as also to Canada. The reverend gentleman above-named had always a fear of this servant, and thought him the worst of characters. Some good neighbours assisted in getting him sufficient means to procure his passage back to Manchester, England; he was not long there before he addressed a letter to his former master asking for a re-engagement. This letter has not been answered, as the said John W. Kelly could not be depended upon."
