In 1909, Donald Holt, 8, arrived at Portland, Maine, USA, along with a group of 310 Barnardo children en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.

In 1911, Donald R. Holt, 11, was shown as a Barnardo Boy with Reginald J. and Beatrice Luckey in Monck, Muskoka, Ontario, Canada. His date of birth was shown as February 1900 and his immigration year as 1909.

On January 13, 1917, Donald R. Holt, 18 (he was actually 16), enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at R.M.D. #5, Perth, Ontario, Canada; he was born in Bradford, England; his next of kin was his mother, Mary Holt, who resided in Higleford, Bradford, England; his date of birth was Jan. 5th, 1898; he was a farmer; and he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 3-1/2 inches in height; dark complexion; blue eyes; dark hair. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith. He had distinguishing marks consisting of: mole 2-1/2 inches to left of right nipple and a little above; scar left calf inner side; scars below left of postella; scar right postella; and a mole behind left shoulder.

Donald Holt was rejected for service due to being underage.

On May 14, 1917, Donald Royston Holt, 18 (he was still 16), once again enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces at Renfrew, Ontario, Canada. He declared: that he resided at Pembroke, Ontario, Canada; he was born in Glasgow, Scotland; his next of kin was his mother, Mrs. Mary Holt, who resided in Perth, Ontario, Canada (originally it was stated that she resided in Glasgow, Scotland and crossed out); his date of birth was February 5, 1898; he was a teamster; he was not married; and he had previously served in the CEF in the 240th Btn. for 2 months (he had been rejected for service due to being underage.) He was described as 5 foot 3-1/2 inches in height; ruddy complexion; blue eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith. He had distinguishing marks consisting of: 4 vaccination marks left arm and a vaccination mark on his left left, inner surface; end of first digit-right hand off, but good working finger left.
