Notes Kathleen's mother was Alice Harriett Hughes, who was admitted to the Hastings Workhouse on October 21, 1897, with her daughter Violet. On April 10, 1898, Kathleen Florence Hughes was born. On October 3, 1898, Alice and her two daughters were discharged from the workhouse.
The name of Kathleen's father is not known. Her mother, Alice H. Hughes was also born out of wedlock to Alice B. Hughes, who, in 1881, was the matron of Royal Victoria Patriotic Asylum (Girls), 4 Trinity Road, Wandsworth, Surrey, England. Alice H. Hughes was at that time a boarder of the facility. At the time of Kathleen's birth, her mother was employed as a domestic servant at St. Clement, Hastings, England.

Kathleen Hughes was a resident in the St. Saviors Home, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England.
In 1913, Kathleen Hughes, 15, arrived in Quebec, Canada, along with a group of 26 girls as domestics en route to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. (Her sister, Alice Hughes arrived before 1912.)
