HOLIDAY MAKERS PAY HEAVY TOLL OF LIFE
...
Two Drowned From Ferry

Chatham, June 30--Running off a man-propelled ferry into the waters of the Chenal Ecarte, off Walpole Island, an automobile carried John Hooper, aged 63, of Dresden and Florence Bidulph, aged 26, of Chatham township, to death to-day.

Rising of the waters fo the river overnight and consequent increase in the incline of the ferry, necessitating extra speed to make the ascent, together with the failure of Hooper's brakes is believed to have been the cause of the accident.

The Toronto Daily Star, Saturday, July 6, 1929:

JURY BLAMES ROAD FOR DEATH AT FERRY

Declares Chain Guarding Slippery Approach Was Not Fixed

Wallacoburg, Ont., July 5--The jury assembled at the inquest to-day into the cause of the death of John Hooper of Dresden who with his companion Miss Florence Piddulph [sic], ran off the Walpole Island ferry in their car into the river Snye last Sunday and were drowned.

The coroner, Dr. H. A. Taylor, presided while Crown-Attorney Col. H. D. Smith examined the witnesses.

The jury brought in the following verdict: We find that he came to his death accidentally by drowning while occupying an automobile which ran off the lower ferry at Walpole Island on Sunday, June 30. "We feel that the owner of the ferry, Solomon Hill, showed some negligence in not seeing that the chain on the ferry was across. The primary cause of the accident was due to the bad approach of the ferry, the responsibility of which falls upon either the county council of the county of Kent or the department of Indian affairs."
