NotesMary had a brother Charles George, born 24 Apr 1883 and a sister Frances Helen born 3 Mar 1889. All were born in Marylebone, and the family consisted of their parents Harriet (Powell) and Samuel John Collins and themselves.

Their father died 3 Oct 1891, when Mary was almost 5 years old. Harriet was unable to support herself and the children and on 19 Dec 1891 Mary was placed in St Hilda's Home for Girls on New St in Marylebone. Charles was also placed in a home, but nothing more is known about either him or Frances. Harriet remarried 4 Feb 1893.

On 21 Jul 1896 Harriet signed a Form of Consent to Emigration for Mary. An Emigration Health Report showed that Mary was in good health and she was declared suitable for emigration. Mary recalled later that her mother told her she would have a better life in Canada .. but she never told her she would not see her family again. On 3 Aug 1896 Mary was received at Peckham House; this was a Home where children often went just before emigration.

Mary sailed on the SS Mongolian, a ship of the Allan Line, from Liverpool on 8 Oct 1896, and arrived in Quebec 17 Oct 1896. She was with a group of children known as Miss Rye's Party, and their destination was Miss Rye's Home at Niagara on the Lake. Her age was listed as 9 yrs, however she was closer to 11. Years later when her birth certificate was obtained for pension purposes, she was quite surprised to find that she was two years older than she had thought.

She lived and worked in 3 or 4 homes in Ontario; she attended school and church, was paid a wage, and was generally well treated.

At some point Mary moved west to Manitoba. She was doing housework in the home of Henry Thompson when she met her future husband, Gustav Leopold Neumann. They were married on 18 Dec 1912 in Melita, MB. They had seven children: Henry George, a second son who lived only a few hours, Marian, Margaret Helena, Augusta, Charles Reinhold and Elsie May. They had 21 grand-children ... about 100 direct descendents to date.
