NotesMy Grandfather-John Mills,proud Cockney, born June 14, 1876-June 3, 1966. arrived on Carthaginian March 27, 1892, with 302 other kids care of Mr. Owen, of Dr. Barnardo's. Left Liverpool March 17, 1892, St. Patricks day-he was 15 yrs. old, 3-4 siblings followed later.

Indentured on farm of Robt. Morrison of Alliston area until approx. 1901,. Treated well he said.

Joined 36th. Peel Regmt. then, becoming Colour-Sargeant & living out of Port Credit. Chosen to represent his regmt. and part of Canadian Contingent, left June 2, 1911, for Coronation of King George V th. of England. 1914 Joined CEF as staff Sargeant-part of first Canadian Contingent, assigned to 1st. Div. 1st. Brigade, 4 th. Battalion (nickanamed the Mad Fourth). Armada left Oct. 3, 1914 for England. Wounded & survived at 3rd. Battle of Ypres, July 1916. (Paschendaal)

Married 1916 to Mary Woodhouse of Enfield, Eng. two children-my Mom: Dorothy Marie Rebecca Douglas, nee Mills; and Hilda Brereton, nee Mills.
Sailed on the Empress of Ireland to Coronation, and the Tyrolia, with the Armada Oct. 3, 1914 to head to England for War.
Disembarked ship in Halifax Aug. 13, 1919, combined troop and passenger voyage, with new family to Canada. Ship named - LAPLAND,Grandpa returning to his new home, but first landing in Canada for the three women.

Buried in Park Lawn Cemetery, Bloor St. Toronto-#11196 with CEF.

A great Father, Husband, Grandfather and man.

They'd ask if he was from London, Eng. or London, Ontario (London in the Woods). He'd answer, "No, I'm from London of the Whole Bleedin' World" Very proud of his heritage. Coronation and his name is mentioned in the book by famed Canadian author-Wm.
