NotesA birth registration was found for Elsie Hancock Maybury: Year of Registration: 1895; Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun; District: Sheffield; County: South Yorkshire, Yorkshire - West Riding
Volume: 9c; Page: 659. Parents: William Hancock and Emma Maybury.

Their mother (Emily) died in England soon after the birth of her third child, George, in 1900. She had been legally married to Samuel Maybury who died years previous to the birth of William, Elsie and George. Following the death of Samuel Maybury, Emily then lived with a man of the name William Hancock, who was several years her junior, and had William, Elsie and George. On the marriage registrations of Elsie and George the father is listed as "William" Maybury.

Their father, William Hancock, was listed on documents as putative, and died of dropsy.

Their half-siblings said they could not afford to take care of the three children and took them to Barnardo Homes.

In 1903, Elsie Maybury, 8 (along with brother, W. Maybury, 9 ) arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 137 Barnardo girls en route to Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. William and Elsie Maybury were immediately separated. Both went to different farms in southwestern Ontario.

George was considered too young at the time to come over. He arrived on the Tunisian in 1912 after receiving a British education.

Will's nephew (George's son), George Maybury, believes that William was reunited with Elsie in 1912 and later on Elsie was reunited with George, but he doesn't believe the three were ever reunited together before Will died in battle at Ypres.

"Elsie continually wrote to the Barnardo Homes to try and get George moved closer to them, but it appears the brothers never met again. ... I believe though that she is the one who tried to keep the family together. When pictures were taken, she wouldn't just write a name on the back -she put a story to keep the context of what was going on."

On November 19, 1915, Elsie Maybury, who resided in Brussels, Ontario, Canada, was shown as the next of kin on the Attestation of enlistment for William Maybury, 23.

In 1917, when she received the news of her brother, Will Maybury's, death, she was shown residing at 1500 King Street West, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On September 25, 1918, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Elsie Maybury, 22, Lady, born in England to Wm Maybury and Emily Sonderson; and Frank Lowe, 20, Conductor, born in England to Arthur Lowe and Sarah E. McLerman.

In 1922 Mrs. F. Lowe of 60 Brenton Street (which is in East York near Victoria Park Road and St. Clair Avenue) was a witness to the marriage of her brother George Maybury.

Frank Lowe died in 1971 and is buried in Pine Hills Cemetery, Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. His Toronto Star death notice states that he was the husband of the late Elsie, and was the father Arthur and Kenneth Lowe of Toronto.
