NotesFred's mother, Mary Ann, had died in 1893, and his father apparently could not care for him-according to the Barnardo records his father was drinking and as a result lost his job as a horsekeeper and subsequntly his place of residence.
Fred was cared for by a sister-in law for a while, but she finally became unable to handle the extra expense.


Fred Sparks was sent from England in 1897 to the farm of John Bell at Vista Manitoba.
On the ship records he was listed as A. J. Sparks, 9 years of age. Some years later he requested a birth record from Barnardo Homes and learned his name was Alfred Charles, not Alfred John, and his birth year was 1886, not 1885 as previously thought.
