NotesHester McClements and two brothers (Thomas and William) were separated from their family after their father died (sometime between 1906 and 1914). Older siblings remained in Ireland. Library and Archives Canada passenger lists show a William McClements, age 7, arriving on the Corinthian, July 1, 1914 and a Thomas J. McClements, age 12, arriving on the Scandinavian, March 19, 1915. Hester (my grandmother) spent the war years in England and arrived on the Scotian, June 29, 1920. She met and married my grandfather, William J. Norton, (Glen Williams, Ontario)sometime in the 1920's and settled in Georgetown, Ontario. They had four boys (Clifford, Albert, Douglas, Bruce).
Miraculously, the three siblings found each other, and in fact William also settled in Georgetown. From family stories, Thomas lived mainly in Toronto, but was somewhat of a drifter. As a boy, I remember 'Uncle Tom' showing up with some regularity at my grandmothers home (every couple years, and usually not in the best of shape). She would feed him, nurse him back to good health, and he would be on his way again. Hester never returned to Ireland or to my knowledge, had no contact with her mother. However, Hugh (and older brother) did visit Canada in the late seventies and was reunited with Hester, William and possibly Thomas.
