COMMENTARY JULY & AUGUST 1902 Ups and Downs
From: "Charlene Madden"

In this issue there is article written by Alfred B. Owen describing the
contingent of 397 boys and girls from the Old Country to the New Country.

279 Males and 118 Females - SS New England, Captain James

Mrs. Davies, Alfred Owen "We confess to being somewhat disappointed at getting so near without quite reaching the 400 total, but with 397 boys and girls on had we had very little tome to lament over the three that were not." The question of transport seemed at first likely to be one of no little perplexity. They wer booked for the Dominion to sail from Liverpool to Montreal,on the 17th of July, but the Dominion had been chartered by the Imperial Government for the conveyance of the troops from South Africa. They received a booking on the 11,000 ton twin-srew steamer New England, leaving Liverpool for Boston on Thursday 17th of July 1902. On the 12th of July the entire party paraded in front of H.R.H. Princess Henry of Battenbur, Lord Brassey, the President of the Institution, and many other distinguished personages. On the second day out from Liverpool, one of the younger boys, William H. Hartley, came down with a case of Diphtheria. On the following Wednesday. little Willie died. He was buried at sea the following morning at dawn. Another death occur at the harbour in Boston, as they unloading the ship, Edward George Adderley fell into one of the holes of the ship from the dock. The funeral was conducted from the Sailors Home, and was attended by over 200 men of the ship's company. He is buried in Boston. From Montreal to Toronto: Mr Griffith left the contingent at Smith Falls with 10 boys for the Brockville branch. 111 girls left at Peterborough for the Hazel Brae The rest of the party went on to Toronto, where the next day, they were sent to different parts of Canada to their respectful employers.
