On May 24, 1913, a marriage was registered between Herbert Edwin Down, 24, and Florence E. Bottom, 21, daughter of Alfred Bottom and Emily Powis. Herbert stated he was born in Lifton, Devon, England; he was a glass cutter; and his parents names were John Ames Down and Mary J. Gregory.

On November 6, 1915, Herbert Edwin Down enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he was born in Lifton, Devon, England; that his next of kin was (Mrs.) Florence Ethel Down (wife), who resided at 282 South Street, London, Ontario, Canada; that his date of birth was May 3, 1889; that he was a lineman; that he belonged to the active militia of the 7th Fusiliers and 1st Hunsars; that he had previously served in the 1st Devons Regiment. He was described at 5 foot 10-1/2 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; and dark brown hair. He was member of the Methodist faith.

He had a brother named Oscar Fitzland DOWN (known as Arthur), 1879-1946.

Herbert is buried at Glendale Cemetery.
