NotesA birth registration was found for Evelyn Winifred Barth: Date: Apr-May-Jun 1887; District: Lambeth; County: London; Volume: 1d; Page: 504. Parents: George William Barth and Ethel Julia Bowley, married June 12, 1886, Southwark, Middlesex, England.

Evelyn Winifred Barth was baptized on June 12, 1887, at St. Mark, Kennington, London, England. Parents: George William Barth and Ellen Julia Barth.

Her granddaughters story:

My grandmother, Evelyn, (whom I was named after) was born April 6, 1887 in Brixton, London. She was admitted to Barnardo's on Dec. 9, 1896 at 9 yrs., 8 mos. old. Also admitted were her three sisters, Ellen Violet, born Sept. 25, 1894; Gertrude Emily, born Dec. 18, 1890; Ethel Florence, Feb. 12, 1889.

At the time the girls were placed in Barnardo's, their mother had died of tuberculosis and heart problems. The father, George William, lost his job and he and the girls went to stay with a relative. The family was impoverished. George became ill, and placed the girls in Barnardo's where he visited them until his death three years later.

On July 19,1900, Evelyn, Gertrude and Ethel boarded the SS Tunisian and sailed for Canada. They arrived in Quebec on July 29, 1900. Three years later, Ellen sailed to join her sisters.

I was so fortunate to have received pictures of my grandmother and her sisters taken when they were admitted to Barnardo's. The pictures were accompanied by some wonderful documentation. The documentation indicates that Evelyn spent some time in Barnardo's Mickleham Cottage.

As a child, I can recall my grandmother sewing clothing, toys, doll's clothing for hours on end. When I asked her who they were all for, she told me that she and a group of friends sent these things to an orphanage in England. At the time I was too young to 'connect the dots', and didn't make the connection that this wonderful woman, whom I loved with all my heart, had spent part of her youth in an orphanage. From what I know through the copies of the letters I now have that are in her handwriting, her experience at Barnardo's was a happy one.

On October 26, 1910, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between Evelyn Winnifred Barth, 23, born to George William Barth and Ellen Julia Bowley; and Charles Rubert Stryker, 22, butcher, born to Ruben Baldwin Lee Stryker and Elizabeth Whittaker.

The couple had seven children (two died prior to 1952): Charles Harvey Stryker, born December 30, 1911 in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died February 7, 1980, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada; Eveyln Winnifred Stryker, born September, 1913, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died of tuberculosis on December 16, 1936, in Wentworth, Ontario, Canada; Vera Elizabeth Stryker, born November 14, 1917, at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died October 1, 1997, at Whitby, Ontario, Canada; Marjorie Ellen Stryker, born June 21, 1919, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died October 11, 1947, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada; Edward Henry Stryker, born March 9, 1921, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died September 10, 1998, Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona, United States; Howard George Stryker, born October 27, 1912, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died November 19, 1995, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada; and Mildred Irene Stryker, born March 7, 1927, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada, died January 18, 1986, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada.

Following is an excerpt from one of the letters my grandmother sent to Barnardo's on Feb.12, 1952.

"Dear Mrs. Tucker .................we (the auxiliary grandmother was a member of who did the sewing for the home) are all glad to know that the small amount we are able to do is of some help. We only wish we could do more. It is such wonderful work, and so many young children are helped through life through the wonderful training at Dr. Barnardo's. We are hoping to send a box over for Easter. My husband also helps. He made skipping ropes and ring tosses, and this time he has made some skipping ropes, bats for the children to play bat and ball with, and a couple of marble boards. ......"
