He was discharged from the workhouse in 1901 after the death of his mother. He was a choir boy at Bath Abbey until age 13, when he was sent to Canada.

In 1912, Francis Sarten, 14, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 181 Barnardo boys en route to Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

On February 3, 1916, Francis Cecil Sartin, 18, enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at 110 Park Avenue, Brantford, Ontario, Canada; that he was born in Yeovil Union England; that his next of kin was his friend, Miss A. Coote, who resided at 26 Marlboro Buildings, Bath, England; that he was born December 11, 1897; that he was a farmer; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 5-1/4 inches in height; dark complexion; brown eyes; dark brown hair. He was a member of the Church of England.

He was fostered / cared for / taught by / befriended by a lady named Fannie Coote at Bath. He maintained an affectionate relationship with her while he was in Canada, and sent her half his army pay all during WWI. She also wrote him in Canada through Barnardos. She gave great kindness to Francis, who saw very little except for hers in his early years.
