NotesGeorge was born in Kilburn, Middlesex, England to William and Mary Ann Stacey on 05 September 1876. Until he was nine years old he lived the life of an ordinary middle class child. His father had good employment and George and his brothers were well looked after. In 1883 his mother died of smallpox, even though she had been vaccinated as a child. His father remarried a much younger woman who was good to the boys. However, she also cared for her younger siblings with the financial help of her brother, so suddenly there were lots of children in the family. Tragedy struck when George's father died in August 1888, leaving his 3 sons, a daughter from his second marriage, and a pregnant wife. Since his father's illness had eaten up any savings, the family found themselves destitute. After much soul-searching George was placed with Barnardos, his younger brother with Marchment Homes and his elder brother who was old enough to work and provide an income, stayed with the step-mother and step-siblings.

George arrived in Canada in June 1889 and was placed with members of the Primitive Methodist Colony at Pheasant Forks, Saskatchewan. As grandchildren, we did not hear much about his life in Canada, before he married, but he was quoted as saying that as home children "we were not given a lot of consideration". However, George was treated fairly and through his diligence and hard work he received a patent for land in Pheasant Forks which he farmed until his retirement; married one of the daughters of a man he had worked for; raised a family to be proud of and lived a fairly long life. He thought very highly of Barnardos and wrote to them occasionally. He also sent financial contributions back to Barnardos in England once he was established. He was also able to keep in touch with his family back home and made at least one trip back to England 20 years after he first came to Canada.
