This boy came to Stepney, and asked for admission to the Homes. He was sheltered in our Receiving House, while enquiries as to his circumstances were being made by one of our officers, who reported the following facts:-
We have no particulars as to the mother, beyond the fact that she died previous to December, 1887, in which month and year the father, a labourer, married again. By his first marriage he appears to have had two children ? William and Ernest.
William stated he had been obliged to leave his father's home on account of his parent's cruelty to him, He admitted, however, that his step-mother had treated him kindly. Our officer was able, with some difficulty, to see the step-mother, who told him her husband (the father) was a lazy man who did very little work. She, too, accused the father of great cruelty toward the lad; her own attitude, however, was one of indifference as to what became of her step-son for whom she asserted they could do nothing. An aunt, Mrs. Jones, an inmate of some alms-houses just outside Barking Station, repeated the allegation of cruelty to his son against the father.
On his own behalf the father explained that he could only get work five months out of the twelve, and that his average earnings did not amount to more than 10s. A week. During the past month he had only done three days' work, though he was then performing night duty at the gasworks. With regard to William, he had always given trouble, owing to the bad company he kept. Several of the lads with whom he associated were even then in prison. His son never brought home his wages. When he had 14s a week, he never surrendered more than 4s and this unwillingness on the part of the boy to contribute to the home a fair proportion of his earnings was the cause of continual quarrelling between father and son. Last October William was earning 8s a week, and his father was out of work. The lad was then informed that (unless he could bring home more money) he must ?clear out?. William did so, and lodged with a Mrs. Dow at Fisher Street, Barking. This woman endorsed the boy's statements, but immediately complained that he would not pay her. The lad's last place of employment appears to have been at Creek Mouth, Barking, where he earned 7s a week. He only stayed for six weeks, when he left because his wages were not large enough. The father asserted that he could do nothing for William, who would not keep his situations; he hoped, however, we should be able to start him in Canada. Two neighbours stated that the father was very delicate and that William was a bad lad.
There are no relatives who could be of any assistance to the lad.
William, who is healthy, was admitted upon signing our Boys' Home Indenture.
