In 1887, Joseph Marchant, 13, arrived at Quebec, Canada, in a group of 18 children from Croydon Union Workhouse, Surrey, England, accompanied by Rev. R. F. Winter and en route to various places.

He was described as medium height; medium build; brown eyes; and nearly bald.
