NotesIn 1884, Stephen Smithers, 15 (along with sister, Emily Smithers, 8), arrived at Rimouski, Quebec, Canada, in a group of 51 young persons sent by Boards of Guardians, accompanied by Miss Edwards and en route to various places.

Stephen Smithers, aged 17, from Wandsworth and Clapham Union, placed with Mr. Dimini, Toll Gate Keeper, Dixie P.O. Hired to work on farm at $30 for the first year and $35 this year and board and lodging. Very well liked."
