NotesSent by Barton Regis Union

August 16 1902, with Mr Gooley, Confectioner, St John City, St John, NB

Age 12, upon his discharge from the General Hospital, it was thought best not to place him on a farm on account of his delicate constitution, and he was received into St Patricks Industrial School for boys, where he spent months. While here he attended school
and was well cared for. Through the efforts of the Lady Superintendant he was placed with Mr Gooley. She has taken a personal
interest in him, and says that one could not wish for a better child. His general health is good, but he is naturally delicate. He should not be placed on a farm

August 17 1902

I called at Mr Gooley's today and saw the child. His present abode appears to be quite suitable. The Gooleys are plain, good hearted people. They have no children, and have promised to send the boy to school. Although he has only been here a few days, they have
already supplied with him with an outfit of clothing

This is my great-grandfather, William Bernardine. He was from Bristol and was sent to Canada when he was 10 years old. I have a record of his pre-emigration inspection from the Guardians of the Poor. He was living at the Home for Boys, Cumberland Road. He apparently had a knack for running away from the homes where he was placed and eventually joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force.
