EDITORS NOTE: Father, Stephen Geoghan, Sr., was not on the 1881 England census. He was on the 1901 census, a lodger, but stated he was unmarried. He died of heart disease on November 7, 1913, Highfield Infirmary, Knotty Ash, Liverpool, Lancashire, England. The eldest child, Patrick, was in the workhouse with the mother and other siblings, but disappeared after 1881. Louisa the mother had remarried in 1885 (stating on the certificate that she was a widow) to Alfred Davis, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire, England. It is theorized that she may have thought or been told that her first husband was dead, or he deserted her and went to Ireland.
In 1885, Stephen Geoghegan, 11 (along with sisters, Grace Geoghegan, 12, and Laura Geoghegan, 9) arrived at Quebec, Canada, with 136 children, Richard Yates in charge, probably en route to Ottawa. It was at this time that the Geoghan children's names were changed to Gagan.
On November 8, 1894, at Belleville Methodist Church, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, a marriage was registered between (John) Stephen Geoghan (aka Gagan) and another home child, Mabel Grant.
Their first child, Laura Maud, was born in Hastings County, Ontario, Canada, in 1896. The family left Canada in 1900 and went to Scotland.
Mabel and Stephen Gagan had six more children in Scotland: Alfred Stephen, born 11 May 1902, Anderston, Glasgow Scotland; Edward (Teddy), born 1904, 41 Richard Street, Glasgow, Scotland; Nelson Grant, born, 1907, Pattison Street, Dalmuir, Scotland; George Copeland, born 1909, Pattison Street, Dalmuir, Scotland; Mabel Louise, born 5 Oct 1912, Pattison Street, Dalmuir, Scotland; and Horace, born 1915, Pattison Street, Dalmuir, Scotland.
Mabel Grant Gagan died in August 25, 1941 in Dunbartonshire, Scotland. Stephen Geoghan/Gagan died January 1, 1954 in Scotland.
