In 1893, E. Smith, 11, arrived at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, in a group of 169 Marchmont children en route to Belleville, Ontario, Canada.

Ernest was husking corn when I called, he is growing nicely, and likes his place very much. Mrs D says "he is a good boy to help about the house" . He will go to school all winter

Ernest was getting potatoes for dinner and singing over his work. He says he is kindly treated and always happy. Attended school regularly and made good progress. Learning to be useful about the farm and helps Mrs Darling in the house. Goes to church and Sunday school.
June 18 1896, with Sanford Darling, Lynn, Ontario
Ernest is getting on nicely, he is well but growing very slowly. Attended school six months last winter and did very well on the whole though not out of the 2nd book yet. Goes to church and Sunday school regularly. He first came in from the strawberry patch where he had been helping. Mr Darling pays him the same for his fruit as he pays the hired helpers
