The following poem was written by Alice and appeared in the Norwich Gazette Newspaper.

"Composed by Mrs. Isaac Clifford, on reacting that her son, Will has listed in the 175 Battalion at Medicine Hat, Alberta on March 14th 1916.

1

Ah! the mail man has come, and what did he bring?
A paper, is that all there is?
Then I will open it up, and see what's the news,
Whether Germans or Allies will win.

With what disappointment I opened it up.
When my eyes did quickly espy
A letter from Will lay there in the fold,
I had been looking for that some time.

With trembling hands I tore open the seal
And read til the tears dimmed my eyes,
Dear Mother, I've got a place that will last me a while
For I belong to the One-Seventy-Five.

No tongue but a mother's can ever explain
The feeling that over me spread,
That he donned the uniform Tuesday at eight
For overseas service it read.

My heart was filled with Oh! such an ache
As only a fond mother knows,
When she first gets sight of the boy that she loves
Dressed up in the soldier's clothes.

2

But our boys in khaki are brave boys
Honourable, unselfish and true,
They go to fight with all their might,
For the flag of the red white and blue.

They have gone to fight for their country,
Their lives the give for their King
We mothers can only knit and pray
That the Allies may surely win,

For we're the mothers of our soldiers
How quickly they've grown into men
We know they must go, but we never know
That they'll come back again.

Then doff your hats to a soldier,
And cheer him on his way,
For what would it be, if the would not give
Their young hearts in the fray.

Dear Father, we pray Thee to guide them
We know that their way will be hard,
May they put on the breastplate of righteousness,
And gather their strength from the Lord."

Isaac Middleton Clifford died on 19 January 19, 1918 in LaSalette, Ontario, Canada. He died of hemiplegia (severe or complete loss of motor function on one side of the body); with the immediate cause being hypostatic pneumonia (pneumonia resulting from infection developing in the dependent portions of the lungs due to decreased ventilation of those areas, with resulting failure to drain bronchial secretions; occurs primarily in the aged or those debilitated by disease who lie in the same position for long periods.)

Alice Eleanor Froud Clifford died October 30, 1934, at Norwich, Ontario, Canada, at age 68. According to her death certificate, Alice had been previously treated for heart trouble prior to her death.
