NotesWilliam was born 15 Nov. 1901 in Heath Town, Wolverhampton. His parents were Samuel Haden (1870-1941) and Eliza Ellam (born 1871). They were married in 1894 in Heath Town, Staffordshire, England. The birth registration was found for William Haden; Year of Registration: 1901; Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec; District: Wolverhampton; County: Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands; Volume: 6b; Page: 654.

In 1909, William Haden, 6 (along with his brother, Ernest Haden, 11) arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 130 children en route to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

In 1911, William Hidden, 8, was shown as the adopted son of Lauchlin Matheson and family of Bateston, Cape Breton South, Nova Scotia, Canada. His date of birth is shown as May 1903 and his immigration year as 1909. William absconded in late summer of 1914 from the Matheson home to enlist for Home Defence.

On June 19, 1928, William (Hayden) Matheson enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces. He declared that he resided at Louisburg, Nova Scotia, Canada; that he was born in Wolverhampton, England; that his next of kin was his sister, Miss Eliza Hayden, who resided at Liverpool, England; that he was born December 25, 1901; that he had no trade or calling; and that he was not married. He was described as 5 foot 8 inches in height; dark complexion; grey eyes; black hair. He was a member of the Presbyterian faith. [EDITORS NOTE: His attestation papers name him as both William (Hayden) Matheson and William Matheson Hayden.)

William Haden died on 6 Feb 1941 when his ship Maplecourt was torpedoed by U-107, captained by Gunther Hessler,and sunk south west of Rockall. Maplecourt was heading for Preston carrying war equipment when she became a straggler from the convoy.
