NotesIn 1901, Sarah L. Butwell, 3 years of age, was shown residing at 29 Court, 7 House, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. Other family members included: Charles Butwell, 31, electro plate stamper; Lucy L. Butwell, 30; Charles Hy. Butwell, 5; Walter Butwell, 2. In 1911, Sarah L. Butwell, 13, arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with 172 children. Her brothers Charles Butwell, 15, and Walter Butwell, 11, as well as two other possible siblings, Sidney Butwell, 9; and John Butwell, 7, also on the manifest, arrived on the Mongolian in 1910, at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, with a group of 154 children.

On November 29, 1916, Maine, USA, a marriage was registered between Sarah L. Butwell, a resident of Augusta, Maine, and William W. Linnell, a resident of St. Albans, Maine.

[EDITORS NOTE--On February 18, 1918, Sarah's mother, Lucy Butwell, 41, widow, was debarred as LPC (Likely Public Charge) from entering the United States through Vanceboro, Maine as a US Citizen, claiming birth in New Rochelle, New York. The immigration officer noted that she had no proof of birth in the United States as a citizen. "Claims born in New Rochelle, New York but husband was English but is dead several years. Claims son John was born in New Rochelle, New York and had lived in Bangor 4 yrs and then admitted born in England and never been in US. Son in Middlemore Home - England a charitable institution which paid his passage to Canada."

In March 1918, Lucy L. Butwell, 41, widow, was debarred as LPC (Likely Public Charge) from entering the United States. She had declared on her entry that she had immigrated from England, and was residing in McAdam, New Brunswick. She stated her son, Walter Butwell also resided in McAdam. She further declared that she had previously lived in the United States, specifically New Rochelle, New York, from 1876-1885 and that she would be residing in the US permanently. She also declared that she was a US citizen, claiming to have been born in New Rochelle, New York.

In February 1920, Lucy L. Butwell, 42, entered the United States. She declared that she was a cook; that she was a Canadian national residing in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada; that her contact in Canada was her son, Sydney Butwell, who resided at 81 Waterloo Street; that her final destination was Hartland, Maine; that she paid for her passage herself; that she had $600 on her person; that she had previously resided in Bangor, Maine; that she was going to stay with her daughter, Mrs. Warren Linnell, for six months; and that she had been born in New Rochelle, New York.]

In 1920, Sarah L. Linnell, 22, married, homemaker, was residing at Athens Road, Hartland, Somerset, Maine, with her husband, Warren W. Linnell, 22, spinner in a woolen mill, and Norman Linnell 1 5/11. Sarah stated that her date of immigration was 1911 and she was a naturalized citzen.

In 1930, Sarah L. Linnell, 32, married, housekeeper for private family, was residing at 30 Quebec Street, Portland, Cumberland, Maine, with her two children, Norman Linnell, 11, and Arthur L. Linnell, 9. She stated she had immigrated from England in 1900. Sarah and Warren divorced. Warren remarried and died in 1979 in Vancouver, Washington State.

Norman Linnell, born August 22, 1918, died on December 20, 1980. He was buried in the Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Box 916a, Old Belgrade Road, Augusta, ME 04330, in Section DC Row 3 Site 31.
